This may sound strange, but understanding door handing is crucial for a smooth-operating door. Not to mention, it can prevent you from accidentally buying the wrong hardware.
So, What Exactly Is Door Handing?
Door handing refers to the direction a door swings when opened. It's an important detail, especially when ordering new hardware or replacing a door entirely. There are four main types. Always determine handing while standing outside the room or house (on the side with the lock/stop, facing the door).
- Left-Hand Inswing: Hinges on the left, door swings inward (away from you).
- Right-Hand Inswing: Hinges on the right, door swings inward (away from you).
- Left-Hand Outswing: Hinges on the right, door swings outward (towards you).
- Right-Hand Outswing: Hinges on the left, door swings outward (towards you).
How to Determine Door Handing:
We always recommend using the 'back to hinges' method to determine door handing:
- Stand in the doorway (or doorframe) with your back towards the hinges (literally turn so the hinge edge of the door is behind your back or butt).
- Stick your arms out at an angle - so that one arm is towards the interior of the room, and one towards the outside of the room.
- If the knob is on your left → Left-Hand, if the knob is on your right → Right-Hand
That’s it! Swing direction is based on the side of your body the knob is on, and inswing/outswing is based upon whether the door is swinging into or out of the room (or interior)... Just remember, "With your butt to the hinges, the hand you grab the knob with is the handing.”
