A Guide to Door Handing by CBS Bahamas

At CBS Bahamas, we know that when it comes to home improvement projects, even small details can make a big difference. One such detail that often gets overlooked is door handing. It might seem insignificant, but getting it right can mean the difference between a smooth-functioning door and a frustrating obstacle. This blog will equip you with all the knowledge you need to tackle door handing with confidence!

This may sound strange, but understanding door handing is crucial for a smooth-operating door. Not to mention, it can prevent you from accidentally buying the wrong hardware.

So, What Exactly Is Door Handing?

Door handing refers to the direction a door swings when opened.  It's an important detail, especially when ordering new hardware or replacing a door entirely. There are four main types:

  • Left-Hand Inswing: Hinges on the left, door swings inward towards you. (most common for interior doors)
  • Right-Hand Inswing: Hinges on the right, door swings inward towards you.
  • Left-Hand Outswing: Hinges on the left, door swings outward away from you (common for exterior doors).
  • Right-Hand Outswing: Hinges on the right, door swings outward away from you.

How to Determine Door Handing:

There are two ways to identify your door handing:

  1. The "Secure Side" Method: Stand on the side of the door where the lock is located (or the side you would typically enter from). This is considered the "secure side." Now, look at the hinges. If they're on the left, it's a left-hand door. Hinges on the right? Right-hand door.
  2. The "Door Knob Grab" Method: Stand on the secure side of the door. Imagine you're reaching to open the door. If you use your left hand and the door swings away from you (outswing), it's a left-hand door. If you use your left hand and the door swings towards you (inswing), it's a left-hand reverse door (same for right hand).

Why Does Door Handing Matter?

Knowing your door handing ensures you get the correct hardware, like door knobs and levers. The wrong hardware can make the door awkward or even impossible to open. Additionally, some doorstops and hinges are designed for specific handing.
