Length, Material, & Stand Out
So, you're finally ready to buy that brand-new measuring tape and you are starting to think about the features you'd like to have in your new tool...
The first thing you want to decide is just how long of a tape measure you will need. Tape measures are available in a variety of lengths, with the length being the distance at which the blade can extend. You'll want to ensure that you are investing in a tape measure that will provide a long enough blade to tackle whatever project it is you plan to be working on. Generally speaking, the longer the blade the larger the tape measure. You may have to sacrifice in carrying convenience in order to maximize blade size.
The material of your tape measure is another important aspect! You'll want to ensure the material of both the housing and the blade is suitable enough for the environment you plan to work in. While plastic housings may provide rust resistance, steel housings can provide more durability. If you are taking measurements in or around saltwater, you may want to use a tape measure with a nylon or stainless steel blade (as opposed to a steel one).
Don't forget to check the stand out! Stand out is how 'straight' you can extend the blade before it ultimately bends over. A long stand out is useful when measuring overhead, or for extended distances without an assistant. Many tape measures will have the stand out distance listed, and generally speaking, a tape measure with a longer stand out will carry a heftier price tag.
